BOSTON: Geo. M. Smith & Co. 1873 [published date: 1873]. Rare First American Edition, second and usual "Smith" issue. Thick 8vo. 8.25" x 6" Inches. (LxB). Pp. xiii, (2), 303 pages + 110 illustrations by Hildibrand. Bound in fine original publisher's pictorial green cloth binding, with gilt designs showing Captain Nemo with a sextant & lettering on front cover & spine in black. First American Edition, second and usual "Smith" issue, of Verne's famous tale of Captain Nemo and the submarine Nautilus. Cover and Title page both say "Seas", on the final page of text, there is no "THE END". Verne can be credited with glimpsing into the future with the military possibilities of submarines, and specifically the danger which they posed to the naval superiority of the Royal Navy, composed of surface warships. The fictional sinking of a ship by Nemo's Nautilus was to be enacted again and again in reality, in the same waters where Verne predicted it, by German U-boats in both World Wars. A classic work. There are numerous close-up pictures of the contents given below; please click on them for a detailed description (See Scans below). Please take some time to view the 50+ pictures in detail, in order to gain a full idea of the contents and condition.

Considerable confusion surrounds the relationship of the two Boston 1873 title pages that can appear in this title -- the James R. Osgood & Company title page, and this usual Geo. M. Smith & Co. one (which refers to the Osgood one and indicates "sold by subscription only"). The bindings of the two are nearly identical (the Osgood binding reads "...UNDER THE SEA" and bears a jellyfish in the center of the front cover, whereas the Smith binding reads "...UNDER THE SEAS" and has Captain Nemo using a sextant on the front cover). Clearly the Osgood one is a bit earlier and is much scarcer: supposedly only about fifteen copies were known to exist. One theory is that the Osgood title page may have designated the subscription issue, and that the Smith one, being much less scarce, must have designated the subsequent trade issue. Another possibility is that most of the Osgood edition was consumed by a Boston fire - there are few (perhaps fifty?) known copies of this 1873 Osgood edition - Sumner & Stillman

Plot Synopsis:
(courtesy of D. Kytasaari -

Ships are disappearing all over the world and it believed to be caused by a sea monster. Dr. Pierre Aronnax, author of the book The Mysteries of the Ocean Deep, his companion Conseil and Canadian harpooner Ned Land are hired by the U.S. government to help put and end to this mystery by joining an expedition on the Abraham Lincoln. After months of searching the Abraham Lincoln finds its quarry and in the ensuing collision, Dr. Aronnax, Conseil and Ned Land are thrown overboard. In their efforts to survive, the trio find themselves on the surface of the "monster" itself, which turns out to be a submarine. Captain Nemo allows the trio to remain alive on board his submarine, the Nautilus, as his permanent guests, meaning he will never allow them to leave to reveal his secrets. The Captain uses this meeting with Dr. Aronnax, whose book he has read, to begin a new cruise through the oceans and seas of the world, so that he can show Dr. Aronnax where his book was lacking in details; meanwhile, Ned Land's primary interest in escape.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (French: Vingt mille lieues sous les mers) is a classic science fiction novel by French writer Jules Verne published in 1870. It tells the story of Captain Nemo and his submarine Nautilus as seen from the perspective of Professor Pierre Aronnax. The original edition had no illustrations; the first illustrated edition was published by Hetzel with illustrations by Alphonse de Neuville and Édouard Riou. The title refers to the distance traveled while under the sea and not to a depth, as 20,000 leagues is over six times the diameter of Earth. The greatest depth mentioned in the book is four leagues. In the book, a league is equivalent to four kilometres.[1] A literal translation of the French title would end in the plural "seas", thus implying the "seven seas" through which the characters of the novel travel; however, the early English translations of the title used "sea", meaning the ocean in general. As the story begins, a mysterious sea monster, theorized by some to be a giant narwhal, is sighted by ships of several nations; an ocean liner is also damaged by the creature. The United States government finally assembles an expedition in New York City to track down and destroy the menace. Professor Pierre Aronnax, a noted French marine biologist and narrator of the story, who happens to be in New York at the time and is a recognized expert in his field, is issued a last-minute invitation to join the expedition, and he accepts. Canadian master harpoonist Ned Land and Aronnax's faithful assistant Conseil are also brought on board. The expedition sets sail from Brooklyn aboard a naval ship called the Abraham Lincoln, which travels down around the tip of South America and into the Pacific Ocean.

ADDENDUM

ONLY 1 COPY OF THIS 1873 EDITION LISTED ONLINE. Price: $6,750.00

Book Description

1873. Translated from the French. One Hundred and Ten Illustrations. (Edition of James R. Osgood & Co.) Sold Only by Subscription. Boston: Geo. M. Smith & Co., 1873. Original green cloth decorated in gilt and black, all edges gilt. First American Edition, second and usual "Smith" issue, of Verne's famous tale of Captain Nemo and the submarine Nautilus. Clearly the Osgood one is a bit earlier and is much scarcer: supposedly only about fifteen copies were known to exist, but we have handled more than a dozen of them over the past 15 years (all between $12,000 and $27,500), so our guess would be more like thirty to fifty. One theory is that the Osgood title page may have designated the subscription issue, and that the Smith one, being much less scarce, must have designated the subsequent trade issue. Another possibility is that most of the Osgood edition was consumed by a Boston fire. This copy has all page edges gilt -- a deluxe feature for which the original buyer paid extra; by far the majority of copies does not have all edges gilt. On the final page of text, there is no "THE END" (some copies have it, some have it partially, and some do not have it at all; this is not an "issue point" as is sometimes claimed, but merely a case of type slippage during a single print run, with no bearing upon which copies were actually first to reach the public).~As for condition, this is a bright, nearly fine copy (the very slightest of rubbing at the extremities, a touch of foxing on only the first few and last few leaves). Taves & Michaluk V006; Myers 56.
