This book is written as a novel but according to the jacket description it is based on documented facts. A vivid account of the five infamous days when wild mobs stormed through the streets of New York City, unleashing their hatred against the National Conscription Act which allowed richer members of the community to buy their way out of the draft for three hundred dollars, burning more than 50 buildings and hunting down and stringing up to lamp poles, Negroes, who were seen as strikebreakers by the rioting laborers. Conscription into the Union army had been initiated in the days after Gettysburg; with the exception that a man could buy his way out of military service at a cost of $300. A protest broke out over this exemption, and escalated into five days of looting, burning and violence that included vicious hate crimes against African Americans.
