James Buchanan - Handwritten and signed letter attacks U.S. Grant:
$383.00

JAMES BUCHANAN (1791-1868)15th President of the United States, serving immediately prior to the American Civil War. Historians fault him for his failure to address the issue of slavery, bringing the nation to the brink of the Civil War.

Great content hand-written and signed letter \"James Buchanan\", 3pp. 6\" x 8\", Wheatland, Feb. 13, 1868. Buchanan, no stranger to political patronage and setting his friends up with government positions, writes: \"...I might request Judge Black and yourself to call upon the President and recommend his appointmentas Postmaster...Mr. Flinn has been a faithful and true friend...The President has paid but little wishes to the Democrats of this County...I have not the least idea I could serve Mr. Flinn by a direct application to the President: and yet it is painful for me to refuse...\"

Buchanan also attacks Gen. Ulysses S. Grant: \"...I have never had much admiration for General Grant; but yet I deeply regret for the character of the country that he has placed himself in such an unfortunate position in his action towards the President...\"

Fine condition.

Having survived his impeachment hearing, President Andrew Johnson was setting his sights on reelection. He and Grant had argued violently - and publicly - over Grant\'s position as Acting Secretary of War in Stanton\'s place, and this dispute contributed greatly to bringing on Johnson\'s impeachment.
