CONGRESSMAN JAMES GARFIELD INTRODUCES A TELEGRAPH SPECIALIST TO THECOMMISSIONER OF INTERNAL REVENUE, COLUMBUS DELANO

JAMES GARFIELD (1831-1881). Garfield was the Twentieth President.

ALS. 1pg. 5” x 8”. June 14, 1869.Washington D.C. An autograph letter signed “J.A. Garfield” as a Congressman fromOhio. Garfield wrote to the former OhioCongressman Columbus Delano, then the Commissioner of Internal Revenue: “Dear Sir Permit me to introduce Col J. C.Van Duzer --- who was Chief of the Telegraph Corps in the Army of theCumberland. He knows all the mysteries of telegraphing & telegraphic cipherand is a worthy and honorable man. Very truly yours J.A. Garfield”. James C.Van Duzer was a member of the United States Military Telegraph Corps, a specialforce established in 1861 for the purpose of facilitating telegraphiccommunication for the Union Army. Although the Military Telegraph Corps was acivilian organization, Van Duzer seems to have also been in the military atsome point. The letter is written in purpleink on lined paper and has a couple of mailing folds; it is in fine condition.
