This is a museum-quality set, a squashblossom necklace made of beads fashioned from mercury dimes byrenowned Navajo artist James McCabe, and matching, signed earrings.There are 125 dimes used in the construction of this necklace: in thebeads themselves (two dimes each), the \"squash blossoms,\"and the ends of the naja and hook closing at the back. The dimes datefrom at least 1917 to 1945, but I did not examine every bead, so youmay find more of a time span. Although it is made in the \"oldpawn\" style, it is new, but the coins are all genuine, from theDepression and World War II years.

The necklace is very large and veryheavy. It weighs 14.6 ounces (415 grams) on my postage scale. Thenecklace alone is 29 1/2 inch in length, and the naja adds 3 moreinches. So from back hook to bottom of naja it is 17 inches. Thebeads are strung on chain and the necklace is sturdy and extremelywell made.

I purchased this necklace in 2007 froman dealer who specializes in Native American jewelry, and stillsells extensively on . (I will be happy to give you her name andstore name, if you are interested.) I believe she bought thisnecklace directly from the artist. It was new when I bought it, and Iwore it only once. Although I really like it, and find itfascinating historically, the necklace is just a little large for me.It is wearable however, for the right person.

The necklace is signed on the back ofthe naja and also on one of the cones at the back clasp (see photos).The earrings are also signed, as can be seen in the photo. Thesignature is JMc.

This necklace is made of \"coinsilver,\" which is 90% silver and 10% copper. It can be called900 silver.
