Your chance to own a real piece of American history!James Monroe (April 28, 1758 - July 4, 1831) was the fifth President of the United States (1817-1825). Monroe was the last president who was a Founding Father of the United States, the third of them to die on Independence Day, and the last president from the Virginia dynasty and the Republican Generation.Born in Westmoreland County, Virginia, Monroe was of the planter class and fought in the American Revolutionary War. After studying law under Thomas Jefferson from 1780 to 1783, he served as a delegate in the Continental Congress. He took an active part in the new government, and in 1790 he was elected to the Senate of the first United States Congress, where he joined the Jeffersonians. He gained experience as an executive as the Governor of Virginia and rose to national prominence as a diplomat in France, when he helped negotiate the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. During the War of 1812, Monroe held the critical roles of Secretary of State and the Secretary of War under President James Madison.

About Presidential Land Grants

The item that you are offerding on is an authentic land grant signed by the President. A word of caution: Don\'t be fooled by many of the other items out there that offer \"Presidentially Signed Land Grants.\" If the land grant was issued after 1833 (by any President after Andrew Jackson), it was not signed by the President\'s hand. In the early days of the American republic, the President was a relatively accessible figure.  One of the President\'s more mundane duties in those early days was to sign certain routine documents himself, in order to make them legal.  Of course this continues for important documents such as Congressional bills and foreign treaties.  But early Presidents signed everything from military commissions to ships\' papers to patents for land grants.  And the latter, in those days when the federal government was selling the entire frontier in small parcels to individual settlers, became a monumental chore.By the early 1830s, the chore had finally gotten out of hand.  In June 1832, the Commissioner of the General Land Office wrote to Congress that there were more than 10,500 completed land patents waiting the signature of President Andrew Jackson. Congress passed a law in March 1833 to relieve this burden, authorizing the President to appoint a special secretary to sign land patents - in essence to legally forge the President\'s signature. Jackson therefore became the last president to personally sign land grants.
