JAPANESE ANTIQUE C.1850 THICK KEYAKI WOOD GO GAME BOARD GOBAN CARVED WOOD LEGS:
$133.50

I picked up this thick late Edo Eraantique (c. 1850\'s) goban (go board) ata dealer only sale in Japanlast year. I have been buying fine go boards at sale in Japan for over 35 years now and I find this board an exceptional bargaindue to its warm aged patina and the character of its well played top grid. The top grid is almost worn out in the center of the board. It can still be faintly seen (see enlarged pictures). There are two unusual butterfly splines placed on a century and a half old check (see last picture) in this ancient slab of zelkova wood.
The style of legs as well as the use and thickness of this indigenous zelkova slab place this board in the Edo Era (1600 - 1868). By the mid 1860\'s other woods were being imported from China and other countries. While the center grid lines have been all but worn through from a century and a half of play, it still remains quite playable and, aside from some side stains (see enlarged pictures) this board remainsin verygood condition witharich warm aged patina. It has a solid 5\"(12.5 cm) solid top slab of aged, kiln dried keyaki (zelkova) wood.Four nicely carved 4 3/4\" woodenlegs (11.5 cm) for a total height of 9 5/8\" (24 cm). The top is17 1/2\"by16 1/4\"(44 x 41 cm).It also weighs in ata hefty37pounds (one of the heaviest boards I have had in over ten years).

It stands flat on the floor and has a level playing surface. Enjoy the enlarged pictures.

Please note: the go ishi (stones and bowls) seen in the first picture are not included but will be soldin another listing on sailerking.

For the go player who wants to havea vintage goban with lots ofcharacterat a fraction of the cost, this is the board for you. A comparable board would easily cost in excess of $3,500 in Japan today, but I find this board more attractive than a new board due to its well played 150+year old rich aged patina. You\'ll love it, I guarantee it.........If you purchase this item and are not completely delighted with it, you may return it for a no questions asked refund within 14 days of receipt.
