ShungaHand-painted Shunga Book, Japanese 1920s, showing a Japanese impression of Korean sex practices A very intriguing accordion-fold book of Shunga, or erotic, images. The book is hand-painted in ink and watercolor with twenty-four images. It is painted in a style that suggests a Japanese artist in the 1920s, but the figures depicted engaging in various sex acts are Korean, hence the title, which translates to something like Secrets of the Peninsula. The figures depicted in the book are wearing Korean clothing in the few pages where clothing is worn. Presumably this book was painted by a Japanese artist for Japanese visitors to Korea during the Japanese occupation. The book begins with some rather innocent images of a beautiful woman admired by some men as she is borne in a sedan chair. There is an image of a woman with a young child on her lap who is gesturing at a pair of dogs copulating. Later images show the woman from the sedan chair having sex with her husband, in a variety of positions and manners — including the position commonly referred to as sixty-nine. There is also one image of a woman (presumably the same one depicted throughout the book) having sex with an older man.The book is bound accordion-style in gold cloth boards with the title in ink on applied paper. This is nested inside a folding cloth and boards cover— also with the title on an applied paper slip — with bone clasps, one of which has broken.Condition: The broken bone clasp is the most evident damage. The book is on great condition with minor handling wear to the pages and a few minor bumps to the outer cover. Upon request I can supply more high res images for review.
