JAPANESE STERLING SILVER & CLOISONNE BOWL; CRANES & FLORAL; SIGNED FOR MEIJI SILVER WORKER MASATAMO; ORIGINAL PRICE $8500 USD

We are quite pleased to offer this important Meiji sterling silver and enamel bowl.

Recently appraised by Japanese Arts Specialist for Christies, Manhatten.

He translated the signature as that of Masatamo.

A similar size and quality silver & enamel bowl is listed for $29,950 USD.

See # 281360247590.

From our 40 year collection of Meiji silver, containing nearly 250 examples.

Most of these acquired in the 1970s and 1980s.

Meiji period Japanese silver was the finest the world has ever known. Much was crafted by former Samurai. Imperial decree had outlawed their warrior culture. Forcing the Samurai to channel centuries old sword making skills into breathtaking presentation and household silver.

The Meiji silver artisans were so highly regarded that Tiffany, Gorham and leading British firms sent staff to Japan to \"learn\" (steal) the secrets of the Samurai.

Classic twelve petal form.

Double walled construction.

Brilliant applied silver and enamel scene of cranes along gentle stream.

One crane appears to be grooming himself. While the other peacefully watches. Standing in shallow water. As depicted by the delicately engraved wavy lines. A design feature specific to Meiji silver.

Multi-color enamel iris displays, and royal chrysanthemum. Wisteria streams cascading downward.

Never monogrammed.

The Meiji center bowl is 8 1/4 inches diameter and 5 tall and weighs 24 1/2 (standard) ounces.

Rich, lustreous sterling patina throughout. Stands even on table or display. The enamels for the most part retain their rich vibrant colors, see numerous close ups.

Please note the following as there are no returns for this bowl.

Slightly tilted on base. Several shallow bumps - dents none break the surface. Scattered loss of enamel, most to cranes as shown. Few bits of solder. Numerous tiny pinhead bumps (see image) none break the surface.

In perfect condition this is a $20,000 bowl. As evidenced by the similar example on selling for $29,950. USD
