We are quite pleased to offer this rare Japanese silver gold and copper scholar\'s box.

From one of the most important Yokohama firms of the Meiji period Samurai Shokai.

Examples from the firm in museum collections and major private ones including the Kahlili collection.

Classic rectangular form.

The cover with beautifully hand carved scene of song bird perched atop flowering cherry blossom branch.

The bird highlighted with copper cap and gold eye.

The flowers delicately detailed and cascading down side panels. The continuous scene against all over soft hand hammered surfaces.

Original rosewood interior.

Signed for Samurai Shokai Yokohama Sterling.

Never monogrammed.

This important Meiji Samurai Shokai mixed metal scholar\'s box is 6 by 6 1/4 inches. Rosewood interior so no weight offered.

Excellent condition. Rich, lustreous sterling patina throughout. Stands firm on table. The mixed metal bird in garden scene retains original detail. Few soft small bumps to cover.
