JAPANESE STERLING JARDINIERE * KUHN & KOMOR * DRAGON 50 Oz.


A monumental hand wrought Japanese sterling silver iris and dragon rare form in Meiji silver.


Signed by the maker and by Kuhn & Komor.

Founded in Yokohama in 1869 by Hungarian jew Moritz Kuhn.

Joined by family, became Kuhn & Komor 1894.

Shortly thereafter, shops in Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Examples in museum and private collections

including the Kahlili collection.


Unique raised rectangular form.

Double wall construction only found in the meiji silver.

Hand chased iris in exceptionally relief,

rising from gentle stream.

The moving water displayed as series of long sweeping lines.

A design technique specific to Meiji arts for centuries.

Boldly cast spiked horn, long flowing tendril dragon head feet.


This Japanese sterling iris and dragon

jardinere is 14 1/4 by 9 1/2 inches and

it weighs 50 1/2 standard ounces.
