Portrait miniature of the Emperor Napoleon I wearing the uniform of the chasseurs-รก-cheval with red collar and sash, the Cross and the \"Grande Aigle\" of the Legion d\'Honneur and the insignia of the Iron Crown of Lombardy, in contemporary engine-turned gilt-metal rectangular frame.
This miniature was acquired by its previous owner (English collector) at Sotheby\'s London Sale on the 11th March 1985 (lot 151; see our image nr.7) as a work of the well-known Parisian portrait miniaturist Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Duchesne (who - as it is known - repeatedly painted this portrait; for example, see our images nr.8-9).

Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Duchesne (1770 Gisors, Eure - 1856 Paris) was a son of sculptor J.B. Duchesne. He was a pupil of Vincent and painted miniatures on ivory and on enamel. His portraits - according to Schidlof - are remarkably expressive and life-like and of execution equals that of Augustin. He was the author of the famous miniature of Napoleon (sic!) which was given to Marie-Louise by General Berthier. He exhibited at the Salon de Paris from 1802 to 1842 and obtained in 1814 the Legion d\'Honneur. A good number of the miniatures and enamels that he exhibited belonged to the Queen of France or to the Duchess of Berry. He painted also a series of enamels after Sir W. R. Ross for Queen Victoria.
Schidlof says further that the works of Duchesne are very rare, being chiefly in the hands of aristocracy.
From 1840 to 1848 Duchesne was engaged in completing the collection of enamels for the Louvre.

Our images nr.10-11 offer his extensive biography from N. Lemoine-Bouchard and show two miniatures by him that were sold in April 2011 for US $53000.
