This letter signed by Confederate President Jefferson Davis to his nephew and Aide-de-Camp Colonel John Taylor Wood on February 9, 1863 orders Wood to:

\"Proceed to Wilmington, Charleston, Savannah, Mobile, Port Hudson and Vicksburg for the purpose of inspection and report.\" He was to inspect the naval defenses & \"vessels afloat with reference to their personnel, armament, and powers of offense and defense\".......he further discusses vessels running theblockadeaswell as \"our guns and water defenses\".Upon his return to Richmond he was to report the results of his observations. Among other things, his report led to the strengthening of Fort Fisher

This letter comes with the actual commission received by John Taylor Wood appointing him as Aide-de-Camp to Jefferson Davis with the rank of Colonel of Cavalry. The commission is signed by Confederate Secretary ofWar James Seddon.

It is of note that Colonel Wood served on the Merrimack during it\'s famous battle with the USS Monitor.
