New Book on recording pioneers found on old 78s and Edison cylinders:

The Collected Writings of Jim Walsh, Volume 1

Compiled by Tim Gracyk

In this privately published book (Sept. 2012), I compiled the earliest articles of Jim Walsh, the expert on old phonograph artists. This is Volume 1, spiral binding. I printed only a few (labor of love--something I wanted on my own reference shelf).

These articles come from Talking Machine World, Phonograph Monthly, and Hobbies Magazine. Also included is a bit of Jim Walsh\'s personal correspondence--some letters to Quentin Riggs. The Jim Walsh dates are 1928 to 1950 (but rare non-Walsh items are included -- you\'ll find early phonograph literature from 1893 onwards).

The book was too big to continue beyond 1950. I intend to compile Volume II so all of Jim Walsh\'s articles (and the best of his letters) are collected, but creating the second volume will take time.

This new book has lots of rare visuals, death certificates of people (like Edward M. Favor and J.J. Fisher), letters from tenor Harry Macdonough to Jim Walsh--scarce items!

Included are the Jim Walsh articles from Hobbies Magazines, starting in 1942 when Jim Walsh began his long series about recording pioneers.

ABOVE IS A PHOTO OF JIM WALSH WITH BILLY MURRAY, IRVING KAUFMAN, AND OTHER PHONOGRAPH ARTISTS.

This is not a fancy book from a big publisher. Instead, it is privately published. If you know my other spiral bound books duplicating pages from TALKING MACHINE WORLD (I did these after my years of publishing Victrola and 78 Journal), you may know the spiral bound format already--unique!

Good size book--tons of information. If you admire Jim Walsh, you will NOT be disappointed. I\'m quite pleased with how this book came out (after the many hours of tearing apart old HOBBIES magazines). Acquiring all back issues of HOBBIES was expensive and difficult, but I did it!
