John C. Fremont (1813-1890), known as \"The Pathfinder,\" was famous in the 1840\'s and 1850\'sas a western explorer. He was one of the first senators from the new State of California and was the first Republican candidate for president in the election of 1856 but lost to James Buchanan.At the beginning of the Civil War, he waspromoted Major General in the regular armyand placed in command of the Union armies in the West by President Lincoln in June 1861 but was relieved of his command in September 1861. In early 1862, he served briefly in command of the Mountain Department in Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky. In June 1862, he declined further service and went to New York where he remained for the rest of the war with no further commands. He did make an unsuccessful attempt to run for the presidential nomination in 1864. Fremont certainly had a very colorful life.
