$739.00

This sale is for a presidential document signed by JohnQuincy Adams on April 23, 1827 while President.John Quincy Adam\'s signature is authentic and genuine. This document is about 13\" x18\". John Quincy Adam\'s signatureis about 1 1/2\" long. This is amilitary land grant, which is rarer than the more general land grant seen atsale.

John Quincy Adams served as the 6th President of the UnitedStates from March, 1825 to March, 1829.John Quincy Adams also served in a variety of roles in government, suchas the 8th US Secretary of State prior to becoming President.

This document is also signed by George Graham, theCommissioner of the General Land Office. As background, Captain George Graham served a short period as the actingUS Secretary of War under Madison and Monroe\'s administrations from 1816 to1817. He was commissioner of the U.S.Land Office from 1823 to 1830.

Overall, this document is in great shape with the writing onthe document well preserved. ThePresident signed his name J. Q. Adams, which is typical, and this signature isconsistent in darkness across the letters.

This document had been folded in the past with onehorizontal and two vertical folds and is now stored flat. On the front, there is toning by thefolds. There is some toning discolorationaround the edges. The seal is intactwith three very small chips (maybe 1/16\" to 1/8\" each). There is a 1/8\" chip on the lower righthand side. There is some rippling on thetop left by the all caps \"JOHN QUINCY\". On the back, there is toning by the creasesof the fold. This document has beenstored in a mylar holder in a dark place and in a smoke free home. This piece comes as is and in thisholder. This holder is open on the topand this document can be easily removed from this holder.

This military grant is quite different and rarer than themany general Land Grant documents signed by John Quincy Adams that come up forsale. This land grant was provided inconsideration for the military service. My understanding is that military land grants served as a way for theUnited States to meet its obligations to soldiers. As printed in this document, this particularmilitary land grant was provided pursuant to an Act of Congress of the UnitedStates dated August 10, 1790, entitled \"an act to enable the officers andsoldiers of the Virginia line on continental establishment to obtain title tocertain lands lying northwest of the river Ohio, between the Little Miami andSciota.\"

As an aside, by the early 1830s, the chore of having thePresident sign land grants had finally gotten out of hand. In June 1832,the commissioner of the general land office wrote to Congress that there weremore than 10,500 completed land patents waiting the signature of PresidentAndrew Jackson. Congress passed a law in March 1833 to relieve thisburden, authorizing the President to appoint a special secretary to sign landpatents–in essence to legally forge the President’s signature. Jacksontherefore became the last president to personally sign land grants.

This document comes with a Letter of Authenticity fromPSA/DNA authenticating John Quincy Adams signature. The PSA certificate # is H42233.
