Born in the port city of Hull in the east coast of England and worked as a sailor, Swift\'s maritime painting carries a compelling momentum that cannot be easily imitated. In this particular work, which fits perfectly into the best selection of the artist\'s oeuvre alongside some of his works in the national collection, Swift has created a painting that is beautifully dramatic, marvellously blending the turbulent with the serene.
The painting is in a very good antique condition. The canvas has been relined and restretched, most probably during the mid 20th century. The canvas shows a network of various shapes of craquelure running throughout as well aslightmiscellaneous marks at places. The frame, a good quality a mid 20th century fluted gilt frame, is in a good to very good vintage condition with minor losses, accumulated dirt and light cracks and surface wear.
