Antique Black Americana figural bronze inkwell of the 19th century folk character \"Johnny Griffin\". This inkwell most likely dates from the late 19th-early 20th century and depicts the head of the young Black man wearing a torn hat. The hole in the hat serves as the pen holder. The back of Johnny\'s head is hinged - lift it up and inside is the inkwell with its original bronze insert and a compartment for fountain pen nibs. The inkwell is very well crafted in bronze with a lush dark patina, and sculpted with deep detail in the young man\'s face and an almost Art Nouveau floral design near the bottom. The underside has a raised and somewhat smudged serial number \"4557\" and near the corner is the inscription \"TIFFANY\". I doubt if this is the actual Tiffany & Co. of NY, but the name does raise eyebrows. The inkwell measures 5.75\" by 3\", stands 2.25\" tall, and weighs 1.5 lbs. A stunning piece of Black Americana and a wonderful antique figural inkwell.
