Below is a kifwebe mask attributed also to the Baluba tribe. The nose forming part of a crestlike hairdo are very impressive. It has these enlarged eyelids, protruding boxlike mouth and lineal ornamentation, often in red and white pigments on the entire surface of the mask. It embodied supernatural forces. The kifwebe society use it to ward off disaster or any threat to the community. This mask is worn in any ceremonies honoring a dead chief, at the installation of a new chief and at welcoming important visitors in the village. It had the capacity to heal by means of the supernatural force it was supposed to incorporate. They perform the ritual of exorcism by holding the sick man\'s mask while a magician acted as if he were casting it into the fire.

The roots of Ethnix

As ETHNIX has become an established physical entity on Broadway in the heart of Manhattan, its origin had its inspiration from the Secret Museum of Mankind, which was an anonymous collection of ethnographic and risque images of earths inhabitants throughout the four corners of the earth published by Manhattan house in the 1930′s. This fascination in my youth cast the die for my future worldwide travels and ethnix was to become the funding source for research and the collection of artifacts. As one reviewer described the book… The Secret Museum of Mankind reveals a lost world-and -the fading faces of the indigenous humanity that once covered the globe. Adventurer transport the reader to another era. The native cultures of America, Africa, Asia, Europe, and the islands of the seas were so fascinating as they existed upon the book’s first publication nearly a century ago. Here revealed, by a thousand black-and-white photographs with captions that reflect the unabashed curiosity and marked sensationalism of the early-twentieth-century are the astonishing variety of rituals, religions, customs, physical decorations, and dress of the world’s native cultures, the elaborate costuming, the intricate and painstaking bodily manipulations, the fascinating practices of he cultures whose native expressions and lifestyles have unfortunately suffered the destructive advancing hands of the twentieth century.
