Original Watercolor Block / Rubber Stamp print on beautiful Okawara handmade Japanese paper (4 deckle edges). Edition size:250. Printer: the artist. Each print differs slightly due to the printingtechnique, thus making each piece a \'unique work\'.Dimensions: 17\" x 12-1/2\" (43.2 x 32 cm) sheet, 9-5/8\" x 9-1/16\" (24.5 x 23 cm) composition. SIGNED, dated \'1995\' (lc) and numbered \'124/250\' (lr) in pencil by artist on recto. In \'Untitled (Cross-Section of a Head)\', Smith exploits the brains abstract, decorative quality by offsetting a rubber stamp in red and blue. Due to the nature of the medium, each print in the edition is subject to slight variation in alignment. Kiki Smith (American, born Germany, 1954) is among the most significant artists of her generation. Known primarily as a sculptor, she has also devoted herself to printmaking, which she considers an equally vital part of her work. Her recent major retrospective exhibition at the MoMA, NY (2003/2004) and accompanying catalogue, Kiki Smith: Prints, Books, and Things, showcase the scope of Smith’s printed art and present it thematically, focusing on such topics as anatomy, self-portraiture, nature, and female iconography. A recurrent subject matter in Smith\'s work has been the body as a receptacle for knowledge, belief, and storytelling. In the 1980s, Smith literally turned the figurative tradition in sculpture inside out, creating objects and drawings based on organs, cellular forms, and the human nervous system. This body of work has evolved to incorporate animals, domestic objects, and narrative tropes from classical mythology and folk tales.
