Kate Douglas Wiggin Riggs, autograph letter signed “KateDouglas Riggs” to concert pianist Lester Donahue in which she encloses a checkfor five seats to his performance and regrets not purchasing twenty-five butthere are too many “present good uses for money- none of these better - however than the solid appreciation due to an ambitious and talented and persevering young artist!” March 14, 1917, 1 page, about 5 ¼ by 6 ½ inches,in very good condition. The originalenvelope comes with the letter. Wiggin Riggs typically signed her personal letters with her married name Riggs.

Kate Douglas Wiggin Riggs (1856 –1923) was an American educator and children’s book author, most notably of theclassic children’s novel Rebecca ofSunnybrook Farm. She was an activeand popular hostess in New York; this letter reflects her love and support ofthe arts in New York, especially young artists like Donahue. Although theletter is formal, Wiggin Riggs and Donahue were friends who oftencommunicated. The letter comes from acollection of Donahue correspondence that I acquired years ago.
