Keith Haring was an influential New York based Pop Artistwho gained recognition for his street art and unique style. He devoted much ofhis time to public works, many of which carried social messages. He achievedinternational recognition and participated in over 100 group and soloexhibitions. Haring was able to attract a wide audience by expressing universalconcepts such as love, birth, death, sex, and war. Diagnosed with AIDS in 1988,he established the Keith Haring Foundation, which supports not-for-profitorganizations dedicated to assisting children \"as well as organizationsinvolved in education, research and care related to AIDS.\" Haring died atthe age of 31 on February 16, 1990.

The Pop Shop opened its doors in 1986 at 292 LafayetteStreet in the Soho neighborhood of Manhattan, NYC. Haring saw the Pop Shop asan extension of his work, a fun boutique where his art could be accessible toeveryone. The Shop sold T-shirts and novelty items with Keith’s imagery as wellas some of his contemporaries, like Kenny Scharf and Jean Michel Basquiat. Haringlater opened a Pop Shop in Tokyo in 1987. Haring painted the inside walls ofboth shops, creating an immersive experience into his aesthetic. The Pop ShopTokyo closed in 1988 and the NYC Pop Shop location closed in September of 2005.
