ABOUT THE ARTISTI remember years ago,where for the 1st time I came across a Mary Tafoya piece in one of the Museums here in Santa Fe..All I remember,was that her work literally stopped me in my tracks & stood out like nothing I had never seen before & it had a very \'signature look\' that had only her name on it.From that moment on,I never forgot this woman\'s work.It struck me,because her pieces had a \'happy,very whimsical\" & heavy \"Folk Art\" feel to them & had this very contemporary Santa Domingo appearance,but at the same time,maintaining \"Old School/Traditional\" techniques..
She definitely developed her own individual,unique style,that you will have no doubt as to whose work it is,once you see a piece of hers.I seek out artists that have their own identity & Mary definitelyhas everything I look for!
She comes from ancestry that passed the art of mosaic down to their children & is also the sister to another very dear friend of mine,\"JOLENE BIRD\"..Their mother & father did the old Santo Domingo \"Thunderbird\" necklaces that they would mosaic onto Battery Casings & LP albums.
Her work is ultra colorful,unique & has a positive feel in all she makes & will not sit down to create,unless her mind,heart,spirit,hands are in all in sync..No where else,will you find this type of art!You can find Mary in many prestigiousMuseums & galleries internationally..
DESCRIPTION:Just zoom in on all provided photos & you will find that this isn\'t just a \"one of a kind\" necklace ,but rather a one of a kind piece of \"ART\" & the most beautiful at that!! It is made with such a remarkable look & when she brought it to me,I nearly fell to my knees! The look is breathtaking & to know this is designed with her highly artistic mind & her skilled hands,makes it even better!
This is called a \'panel\' necklace & sits high on the neck,where statement style necklaces should sit.. Each section is done with a deliberate,irregularity of free form cut, inlaid stone that adds to it\'s colorful & very whimsical look.Each & every stone,Mary cuts & then puts them all together to have their own character..No 2 are duplicated.
Each panel starts off with the top of the \"Conus\" shell(Which she also uses in the panels & is her \'signature\' shell),with the conus being drilled horizontally to then be strung on the Kingman turquoise roundel beads.The mosaic panels are connected to the conus & spaced enough to spread across the bottom of the neckline.Each panel is mosaic onto black jet & each are hallmarked on the backside.Her work is different & you will not be getting a piece that everyone will be wearing ,this will in turn make you stand out from the others! This is Santo Domingo Pueblo art at it\'s finest!!!!
