Khmer Bronze Multi-arm Reclining Deity 'Vishnu', Angkor Wat 'Bayon' Period, 13th C. Extremely Rare Master Works of Khmer Statuary.

Description: An exquisite bronze example of Khmer statuary, depicting the majestic figure of Vishnu Reclining on the Cosmic Ocean, outstretched in his slumber wakefullness, recognizable by his four-arms, serene grandeur, and the sumptuousness of the bronze's adornment, all of which foretells the trend that unfolded in the Angkor Wat style during the 13th century. The statue measures 16.0 inches (40.64cm) in length.

The figure is superbly executed in traditional Bayon fashion, depicted in the resting posture or 'Mahaparinibbana' mudra, shown with his left hand supporting his sleeping head, while the other three hands hold attributes. The right hands before him holds an ornate Club, while his raised hand hold a Conch Shell and the hand behind him holds the Discus. Vishnu is shown unclothed above the waist adorned in mere jeweled ornamentation, wearing a short vertical striated sampot hung low about the midriff, folded over a highly decorative belt passing around his hips. At the reverse is a similar motif, tied in a butterfly notch and adorned with a large jeweled buckle.

XXX His contoured face has a serene downcast expression, with open eyes, arched eyebrows carved in relief meet in the middle above a well-shaped broad nose, a wide mouth with an insipid smile, and finely carved moustache. Pendulous earlobes frame his face adorned with Khmer style triangular earring pendants. The head is covered in tightly braided hair, enhanced by a conical-shaped headdress, enclosed by an interconnected diadem crown. At the back of the head vertical braids hair are woven down to the nap of the neck.xxxx Lost wax cast, with a superb naturally aged patina, revealing a mixture of surface encrustations, malachite, cuprite, azurite, calcite, and manganese, from ground water leeching in the soil, along with embedded soil deposits from the Environment in which it was maintained. The piece is in excellent condition, unaltered in any way, originally discovered in the Siem Reap Province of northern Cambodia.

Data Observation: Bronze (copper) alloy - considerably heavy in weight, mostly a solid pour, extremely well modelled. Excellent condition without repairs. Please view detailed photos for overall quality and minor imperfections of the item.
