Description: An exquiste 19/20th century Bronze statue of a young Celestial Maiden \'Apsara\', the female spirit of the clouds and water, a divine courtesan engaged in a ballet-like performance called \"Apsara Dance\', the sacred dance of Cambodia, practiced in the courts of Angkorian Monarchs. As an important motif in Khmer mythology, she was sent to earth by the god Indra to seduce demons and ascetics. The solid bronze image is constructed with a wedge shaped base, which is fitted into the museum mount. The statue measures 20.50 inches without the removable base.
The goddess stands poise as a naked figure of sensuous attitude, dancing in a promiscuous way, while expressly displaying charming and contorted hand gestures. She appears light and graceful with a well defined figure of harmonious proportion, a naked upper body partially covered by a jeweled necklace, her legs open, and hips covered with a short stylized sampot worn low at the waist and embellished with a large rosette at the back. Her face appears youthful, characterized by a seductive expression, with incised narrow almond-shaped eyes, ridged eyebrows connect above a prominent nose, nicely detailed bow-shaped lips with an insipid smile, and elongated earlobes accented by Angkorian style earring pendants frame her face. Her hair is arranged in finely braided strands woven into two parts, forming a stylized headdress rising to a snake-like pony-tail finial. She is further adorned with lovely jeweled necklaces draped with a hanging pendant, bracelets on her arms and ankelets on her legs.
