Khmer Sandstone Bodhisattva Figure of Avalokite\'svara. Angkor Wat \'Bayon\' Style. 16th C. 123cm Tall

Description: Extremely massive and rare sandstone Khmer Bodhisattva multi-armed deity figure of Avalokitesvara, an iconic manifestation of the Bodhisattva figure, as a male deity, depicted standing in a strong frontal posture on a rectangular plinth, with severed limbs, of which would have held attributes. In Buddhism it is believed that all bodhisattvas are asexual, they appear in various forms in different circumstances. In Khmer, the name is \'Preah Mae Kun Ci Lem\', describes Avalokite\'svara as the bodhisattva who can take the form of any type of male or female, human or non-human.

The figure is superbly executed in traditional Angkorian fashion, stands in \'Samabhanga\' on a small plinth, with all eight of his arms broken, embellished with the Buddha \'Amitabha\' seated in meditation, with the hands folded in \'Dhyanamudra\', centered on his headdress. The figure is beautifully modeled with a seemingly endless repetition of the Buddha, in horizontal rows covering his torso, and accompanied by ten Buddhist disciples seated about his front and back midriff. The Deity is wearing a short vertical striated sampot hung low about the midriff, secured by a highly decorative belt passing around his hips, ornamented in trapped rosettes and incised hanging pendants, complimented by an ornate central panel elegantly draped in stylish fish-tail folds, both front and back. XXX His softly contoured face with indigenous characteristic has a serene downcast expression, with heavy-lidded eyes, arched eyebrows carved in relief meet in the middle above a well-shaped broad nose, and wide lips with an insipid smile are recessed at the corners. The head is covered in tightly braided hair woven in horizontal rows, ornamented by miniature Buddha figures, enhanced by a cylindrical-shaped ushnisha, adorned with a sanctuary at the front, and topped by a lotus flower finial. XXX The figure is classified as \'Bayon\' style art, dating to the sixteenth century, of the Khmer Angkorian Era, presented in its original unaltered and unrepaired condition, with detailing still clearly visible. The relative smooth surface of the stone has a naturally aged patina, with molted variations, showing even wear on the entire piece, and with weathering consistent with age.

Data Observation: Severed arms and limbs are typically found in images of this type, having multiple breaks from the Environment in which they were maintained. Please view detailed photos for overall quality and minor imperfections of the item.
