Khmer Sandstone Reclining Hindu Deity \'Ganesha\', Angkorian Style Art, 17th C. Cambodia.

Description: A superb Khmer sandstone example of Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity from Khmer mythology, son of Shiva and Parvati, known as the remover of obstacles, and God of success and fortune. He is portrayed as an idol with the body of a man and head of an elphant, having only one tusk. Ganesha\'s head is symbolic of the wisdom of the elephant and represents man\'s eternal striving towards intergration with nature. xxxx The image is exquisitely modeled in traditional Angkorian style, chiseled from a solid block of dense sandstone, unaltered and unrepaired, with intricate detailing of the features, depicting a multi-armed divinity figure, resting in the reclining position, poise against a pillow, with his head supported by the upper right hand, while the other three hands hold attributes, the trident in the lower right hand, the conch shell in the upper left, and a delicacy \'Modaka\' a bowl of sweets, held with the lower left hand resting against his knee, which he samples with his trunk. xxxx Ganesha is shown unclothed above the waist exposing his large pot belly practically falling over his garment, a short vertical striated sampot, secured by a plain belt tied around the waist, complimented with a draped sash at the front, and butterfly element at the reverse. The deity is adorned by the intricately carved serpent \'Naga\' coiled about his torso, representing Ganesha\'s sacred thread. xxxx His well proportion head is beautifully rendered with almond-shaped eyes, broken tust, the trunk whorled left, and large ears resting on his broad shoulders. A \'Urna\' or third eye marks the center of his forehead, and is symbolic of his spiritual eye. His hair is arranged in tightly matted braids, bound by an inter-connected \'diadem\' crown, tied at the back, rising to a conical-shaped headdress, embellished with lotus petals, secured by bands, and topped with a bulbous ornament finial. He is further adorned with bangles on his upper arms, bracelets, and anklets.

This skillfully executed image of Ganesha is a stylistic example of the Khmer culture and its dynamic artistry. Its creator has modeled a gracious interpretation of the divine deity in human form, with lively imagination and conviction. It is fantastic in terms of technical mastery of the stone, artistry, and narrative theme, not to mention the historical value, in reference to age, of this amazing and surviving work of Khmer Art.
