Korean Ancient Silla Dynasty Greyware Pottery Vessel:
$425.00

Beautiful example of Silla Dynasty (57 BC – 935 AD)pottery. The shape shows evidence ofChinese influence from its strong association with the Tang Dynasty. The overall shape recalls Chinese bronzevessels in its exaggerated raised foot and the small belly that flares out intoa wide mouth. The pierced decoration inthe foot also seems to have ancestors in Chinese bronze work. The traces of glaze remaining on the vesselshow the characteristic olive green color of this period. The delicately rippled comber decoration inthe neck contrast with the heavier quality of the shape. There are some raised areas on one side ofthe piece that look rather like bosses which may be part of a decorativeschematic or which may be flaws in the execution of the design. The recessed lip shows that this originallywould have been a lidded jar, which has unfortunately been separated from thepiece.

The jar is 10 6/16” tall and about 5” in diameter in thebody (5 3/8” at the rim and 6” at the foot). The vessel may be a burial piece as these are commonly found in tombs. It is still covered with dirt residue andretains only traces of the original glaze which appears to have been chemicallydegraded during its’ interment. I canfind no cracks in the piece (though there may be some hairlines that arecovered by the dirt). The only breaks Isee are a thin sliver out of the rim and some fairly small chips in the rim andin the edge of the foot. One side of thefoot was pushed in slightly when the clay was still soft, giving it anirregular elliptical shape.

Provenance: from the estate of Naomi Lindstrom
