Mandarin Ducks mate for life, and are considered symbols of loyalty and fidelity in Korean Culture.This Mother of Pearl Chest is over 60 years old, and inlaid with real hand cut Abalone Mother of Pearl.
We believe it was brought over in the mid to late 1950s after the Korean War.Measures 46 inches wide, 15 inches deep, and 19 inches tall. Inside has storage space on the bottom and four small drawers at the top.
Newer Mother of Pearl pieces are made from artificial Mother of Pearl which is very shiny and bright.
Real Mother of Pearl has both shiny and dull sections that the Korean craftsman use to add detail and visual effects.
Real Mother of Pearl Furniture like this cannot be imported to the United States any more. The Republic of Korea is also limiting exports of vintage and antique Mother of Pearl items from South Korea in an effort to preserve their cultural heritage.Proper crating will be required.
