Krewe of Rex 1916 New Orleans Mardi Gras Silver Overlay Green Vase Carnival Ball Call Out Favor

The Krewe of Rex was founded in 1872, and it stages the largest parade in New Orleans held on Mardi Gras Day. Rex is Latin for king, and Rex is known locally as the \"King of Carnival.\"
This lovely 1916 Rex Call-Out Favor vase is a prime example of the happy marriage of old and new. It shows the influence of the late Art Nouveau period, and it is an early example of the new art of silver overlay . The technique of silver overlay was quite new when this vase was made because the process of fusing precious metals to glass and porcelain had only been successfully achieved in 1907, and it was a star feature at the 1913 World Exposition. This would have made this vase a very fashionable and, undoubtedly quite expensive, novelty to gift as Call-Out Favors for the Rex carnival ball but, for the members of Rex, the best was only to be expected.
The call-out favor is one of the most cherished customs of New Orleans Carnival balls. Ladies called out to dance are seated in a special section of the ballroom; at the end of the evening, the ladies are presented with a favor by their masked partners. Since the theme for Mardi Gras in 1916 was \"Visions From the Poets,\" a romantically rose-patterned vase was quite appropriate, and the deep moss green of the finish was a popular color at that time.
Condition: Antique. Overall very good. No chips, fleabites, or cracks that I can see or feel. The finish shows a little light scratching and light crackleur. The silver shows patina that is appropriate to age. The interior of the vase has residue of what appears to be ink at the base, so presumably someone once used this as a pen holder. There are no makers marks that I can discern. The rough-finsh marks on the base appear to be original to manufacture and would have been caused by the use of footings when the vase was painted and kiln-fired. The vase photographs lighter in color than it appears; it is a deep moss green.
Measures: about 5 1/2 unches tall and 3 1/2 inches in diameter at the widest point.
