The dinosaur bird

In evolutionary terms, the flightless birds (or ratites) were some of the earliest types of birds to develop. The cassowary, emu, rhea, kiwi and ostrich are still around today, but others, like themoasof New Zealand and the elephant bird of Madagascar are now extinct.

Cassowaries evolved in a region of thesupercontinent,Gondwana, that later broke apart and became Northern Australia, Papua New Guinea and some of the Eastern island groups of Indonesia. Three species of cassowaries are found in Papua New Guinea but only the southern cassowary (also known as thedouble-wattledcassowary) lives in Australia. Two separate populations of cassowary are found here - one in the Wet Tropics between Mt Halifax/PalumaandCooktown, and the other in theShelburn area and Eastern Cape York Peninsula (McIlwraithand Iron Ranges from Temple Bay to Massey River, and possibly into Princess Charlotte Bay).

The purpose of the cassowary\'s distinctivecasque(helmet), which is unique to every individual, is unknown, but recent research suggests that it may help cassowaries to feel the low vibrating sound made by other cassowaries over long distances. This unusual sense, calledinfrasound, was used by some dinosaurs, and is also shared by a few modern animals, including cassowaries and elephants.

Another striking feature of the cassowary is its long, glossy black feathers, which are coarse and hair-like. Cassowary feathers differ from other birds in that they have a quill that splits in two and lack the

barbulesthat normally hold birds\' feathers together.

Asmat is the most famous cannibalistic tribe on Papua. They would put human skulls under their heads instead of a pillow. They would eat brains of their animals mixed with sago worms straight from their halved skulls. They live on small islands in mangrove vegetation nearby the sea, on the south side of the western part of the New Guinea Island. The Asmat build long houses, where they live together. Every family has its own reserved fireplace. In the long house about six or even ten of the group memberslive.

Besides the fact that the Asmat were head-hunters, they also “hunted for names”. Every person was named after someone deceased, or after a killed enemy. Achild was sometimes given a name only ten years after it was born, and after its village set out to kill a man from an enemy village nearby. They had to learn the name of the man they killed, and then bring his skull to their village. Only in this way could a person get aname.
