Presented here for your offerding evaluation is this very large antique salt glazed pottery jug with attractive cobalt floral decoration! This American made earthenware vessel dates to the 19th century and is incised with the number 3, indicating its impressive size of 3 gallons. It stands 15” tall with a base diameter of 9 1/2” and a circumference of 30 1/2”. The jug has a beehive shape and an applied handle. The outside has a gray salt glazed finish that is uneven in its application, with variations in mottling, and heavier glaze in some spots. It is further decorated with handsome stylized flowers in a cobalt blue paint. While the jug is not marked as to manufacturer, the particular flower decor, and shape of the mouth of the jug should be recognizable to avid collectors.

As to condition, there are two fine hairlines on the neck of the jug, which extend down toward the body of the jug and just fade away. They seem to be stable and not affecting functionality. I imagine they are stress fractures that developed over time from lifting the piece by the handle, but I don’t really know. The jug weighs just over 12 pounds. To give you an idea of size, I show the jug with my 17 pound Sheltie. They’re almost the same size! I found what looks like blue paint, on the underside of the handle, as photographed. I did not find any chips or repairs. I would say the jug is in generally very good condition, especially when considering it’s age!
