We recently acquired a large collection of vintage Royal Doulton character or Toby jugs, which we will be listing on so please book mark our sales. We do combine packaging to save on shipping charges.
This sale is for a large character jug. It is part of Royal Doulton’s “The Literary Series.” This one, which was the 11th jug in this series to be introduced, depicts “Don Quixote.” The latter was a character in Cervantes’ novel of the same name. (We also have his servant Sancho Panza listed.)
The jug was designed by Geoff Blower and issued from 1957 to 1991.
The jug is approximately 7 ¾ inches high.
The back is stamped with the Royal Doulton Lion over the crown and the name in quotation marks. (According to our research, Doulton stopped using quotation marks in 1959.)
It also has the number, and the words “Copr 1956 – Doulton & Co. Limited – Rg No. 881509, 33705, 7580, 332/56.”
The jug is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or crazing. The colours are crisp and vibrant. There is a little bit of paint or dirt on the upper rim that appears to be under the glaze. And as is standard in English bone china pieces, there may be small factory flaws such as tiny bits of ash and transfer trapped under the glaze.
