ARTEMIS: In Greek mythology she is the goddess of wild animals, the hunt, and vegetation, and of chastity and childbirth.Artemis was the daughter of Zeus and Leto and twin sister of Apollo. Among the rural populace, Artemis was the favorite goddess. Her character and function varied greatly from place to place, but apparently, behindall forms laythe goddess of wild nature, who danced, usuallyaccompanied by nymphs, in mountains, forests, and marshes. Artemis embodied the sportsman\'s ideal, so besides killing game she also protected it, especially the young. This was the Homeric significance of the title Mistress of Animals.

THE CEMENT BUST: Although this piece is made from cement, it\'s style, pose, and features, are very similar to those busts made of marble found in museums. It stands a statuesque 31\" high. And is 16 1/2\" wide at the shoulders. From the back to the front of the breast it measures about 9 1/2\" in depth. The base is 8 1/2\" square. The bust weighs significantly over one hundred pounds. It was weighed on a scale with a one hundred poundcapacity and it immediately zeroed out over the limit.

CONDITION: The piece was thickly painted white, most likely at the time of creation. There are areas where the paint has flaked. There are other areas of weathering and small flecks of paint erosion. {Please use the close up feature on the photographs}. There are no cracks or chips in the cement itself. It is believed the piece was last used decoratively indoors, as evidenced by the green felt on the bottom of the base. This statue came from an estate in Massachusetts.
