LATE 18TH/EARLY 19TH CENTURY MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY ANN HAY AGED 10 c.1795:
$330.00

Late 18th/early 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Ann Hay aged 10. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to somewhere between 1790 and 1800. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout, the moreso when one considers Ann was just ten years old when she completed it. The upper section of the linen is stitched with the following short verse which as stars and flowers on each side and is underlined with a meandering floral border
Children to your creator God your early honours payWhilst vanity & youthful blood would tempt your thoughts astray
The middle section of the linen is stitched with a central tree with trees and tulips on either side and Ann\'s details beneath which have a floral motif and border on either side, a fruit basket above each border. Beneath Ann\'s details is a central triple fleur-de-lys motif with a stag on each side and a red dog (possibly a lion) below flanked by flowers and birds. Beneath the motifs is the following verseOur life is nothing but a winter\'s day. Some only break their fast and so awaySome stay dinner and so depart full fed. The deepest age but sups and goes to bed
There is a meandering strawberry border above the verse then the whole thing is surrounded by a deep floral border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, darker around the edges and slightly grubby in places. There are also a few small areas of damage to the field. I\'ve photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable. The colours of the wool are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Ann first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are visible tack marks and several areas of damage to the edges of the linen where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher at some point of time. This has resulted in a couple of missing stitches to some of the flowers in the border. Measures 12 1/2 \" x 15\"
