A selection from Her Majesty\'s correspondence between the years 1837 and 1861. From the first Queen Victoria dealt with her papers in a most methodical manner. The Prince Consort instituted an elaborate system of classification, annotating and even indexing many of the documents. The result is that the collected papers form what is probably the most extraordinary series of State documents in the world.A surprisingly intimate collection of letters, showing that the Queen, usually known only for her dislikes and serious demeanor, did have a softer side and even a sense of humour. Political matters both home and abroad during a time of great social, political and industrial changes are also covered.

Dust jackets are of a thin card which are generally clean and in decent condition for age. Some age discolouration/fading to spines and top and bottom edges with other areas ofdiscolouration andhandling marks but lettering/decor still clear.Damp marking to rear cover of Vol. II. Some shelf wear and creasing to top and bottom edges with wear to spine sides and flap folds. Several small surface scratches, scuffs and indentations. Splits, chips and paper losses to top and bottom edges, predominately to head of spines and smaller losses to corners. Several neat clear tape repairs of varying sizes to jacket reverses with similar colouredstrips of papertaped to the inside where there are paperlosses. Jackets are inside (removable) clear fronted, paper backed, protective book sleeving.

Covers generally invery goodcondition for age, which are clean and bright. Alittle fading to spine cloth with some faded/dampspots torear boards and a damp patch with a small area of cloth wrinkled/lifted towards thetop left corner ofVol II.Slight bumping/shelf wear to spine ends and corners with very light shelf wear to edgesand a couple of tiny indentations.Gilding still bright and crispwith virtually no rubbing.

Pages of a off-white/ pale cream coloured,good qualitypaper are clean and in very good order for age. Some age discolouration and foxingtoendpapers and darker to side and bottom text block edges with several spots of foxing. Sporadic pale spots of foxing to some pages, predominately to margins with the majority having very little or none. Very occasional small handling or age mark to margins.A fewtiny corner creases. A section of light creases towards bottom of page gutters caused by binding anda vertical crease to one page. No other creases and no tears. Vol II has a dark pink/red\"bleed\" patchtowards top corner ofinside rear pastedown and free endpaper, with the last 15 leaves having narrow \"bleed\" markings to top corner edges, (getting smaller as it progresses)and a little wrinkling of paper as a result of the wet/damp occurrence to rear board as previously mentioned.The side edge of the first, and the bottom edge of thelast fold out \"ancestral charts\" are age discoloured and a little creased/tatteredas theyprotrude from the text block with one having a short split to a fold. A little handling wear/softening to text block corners and side edges. Top text block gilding still bright but with acouple ofsmall areas of dullingand some small marks/scratches. All tissue guards present, attached and in good condition, witha fewhaving some spots of pale foxing and occasional light handling crease.

All plates are printed on off-white “art quality” thick card with straight cut edges, which are clean and inverynicecondition with the\"portrait\" being inset to an embossed border. Foxing spots to several, predominately to margins and reverses. One plate has been placed at a slight angle with the outside edges having been cut at a slant (this plate is shown in photos.)

Traditional (deckle edged) rough, hand cut, uneven side and bottompage edges.

Bindings still sound. Narrow gapping/separation to a couple of page gutters.

Free from ownership details, inscriptionsor writing.

Booksare complete with no loose or missing pages.

Approx sizes: 16 x 23 x 4-5 cm –641, 575 & 660pages.

These are the 1907 true First Editions, not the much more common 1908 re-prints that are often mistakenly claimed to be the first issue. A complete set of all three 1907 editions are few and far between and still with the original dust jackets are incredibly rare and seldom available.

Overall this complete set of antiquarian, handsomely bound, First Editions are still in very nice condition for booksa hundred and seven years old.Attractively produced, qualityvolumes, on a fascinating historical subject matter with wonderful portraits of Queen Victoria and eminent people of the era and most certainly a collectors item.
