This is the original collection of political debates and speeches between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas, commonly referred to as the Lincoln-Douglas Debates.Running as a little-known candidate for the Illinois Senatorship in 1858, Lincoln challenged incumbent and Democratic leader Stephen Douglas to a series of debates. The result was a memorable chain of lively arguments in front of cheering crowds. The Lincoln-Douglas debates were a series of seven debates between Lincoln, the Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate from Illinois, and incumbent Senator Stephen Douglas, the Democratic Party candidate. At the time, U.S. Senator were elected by state legislatures, thus Lincoln and Douglas were trying for their respective parties to win control of the Illinois General Assembly. The debates previewed the issues that Lincoln would face in the aftermath of his victory in the 1860 presidential election. Although Illinois was free state, the main issue discussed in all seven debates was slavery in the United States.After losing the election for Senator in Illinois, Lincoln edited the texts of all the debates and had them published in a book. This is that book. The book includes a letter from Mr. Lincoln explaining his decision publish this book. The widespread coverage of the original debates and the subsequent popularity of the book led eventually to Lincoln\'s nomination for President of the United States by the 1860 Republican National Convention in Chicago.The format for each debate was: one candidate spoke for 60 minutes, then the other candidate spoke for 90 minutes, and then the first candidate was allowed a 30-minute \"rejoinder.\" The candidates alternated speaking first.THIS BOOK IS IN GOOD CONDITIONThis first edition, antique book is in good condition. The book is well worn and is missing the front and back, blank pages of the book, but is complete otherwise. Bound in brown, cloth covers, the exterior is worn and soiled. It has no bumping, but has mild edge wear and rubbing. The interior is the book has writing and a private pasteboard on the front inside cover as shown. The rear cover has some colored drawings. The front blank pages are missing so the book begins with 3 ½ pages of publisher advertisements before a letter from Mr. Lincoln, all of which come before the title page. The pages are all in nice condition and are generally clean, but some have light foxing or smudging on them, although not bad. Two pages have some lines to the side of the text in pencil. The book is not an ex-library book. The last pages of the book (page 267/268 has about a 1/3 of the page torn off. The book has solid binding throughout; it has no looseness or lean and both hinges are fine. A rare, Civil War item – the original, first edition, Lincoln-Douglas debates.
