VERY RARE - SCARCE EDITION AN EXCEPTIONALLY FINE ILLUSTRATED EDITION of VASARI'S LIVES OF THE MOST EMINENT PAINTERS, SCULPTORS & ARCHITECTS 16 FINE ORIGINAL VELLUM BINDINGS WITH 156 ENGRAVED ILLUSTRATIONS
VITE DE'PIU'EXCELLENTI PITTORI, SCULTORI e ARCHITETTI Scritte DA GIORGIO VASARI MILANO: Dalla Societa Tipografica De Classici Italiani Contrada di S. Margherita, Anno 1807-1811 [published date: 1807-11]. Rare early edition in sixteen volumes. 8vo. 8" x 5.25" inches (LxB). All edges sprinkled blue. Fine original contemporary full vellum bindings, gilt ruled spines with two maroon gilt lettered morocco labels. Previous owners armorial bookplates on the front pastedowns. . Complete as issued. The classic chronicle of Italian Renaissance art, includes famous contemporary accounts of artists from Cimabue to Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Giuliano da Sangallo, Raphael and other Italian Renaissance masters, includes discussions on gem-cutting, private collections, and other topics. The present work is perhaps one of the most elegant publication of Vasari's Lives in Italian; this superb edition includes the famous woodcut portraits of the artists executed by Giorgio Vasari for the original 1568 edition of the Lives. Although only Vasari is named on the title-page, a variety of style and method suggests that the Lives may in fact be a collaborative work (see Charles Hope, "In Lorenzo's Garden," TLS, 24 June 1999, pp.65- 68 and "Can you trust Vasari?," The New York Review, 5 October 1995, pp.10-13). A painter and architect, Vasari wrote the Lives not merely for biographic utility but also artistic commentary. His critical treatment of the subject has earned him the title of "father of art history." Volume 14 is fully dedicated to Michelangelo, who was the only living artist included by Vasari, and he is celebrated as an artist who broke the chains of convention and in whom perfection has been attained. The Lives is "a vital contribution to our understanding of the character and psychology of the great artists of the Renaissance, a term (Rinascita) which he was the first writer to use" (PMM). A classic work. There are numerous close-up pictures of the contents given below; please click on them for a detailed description (See Scans below). Please take some time to view the 50+ pictures in detail, in order to gain a full idea of the contents and condition.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
Giorgio Vasari (Italian: [ˈdʒordʒo vaˈzari]; 30 July 1511 – 27 June 1574)[1] was an Italian painter, writer, historian, and architect, who is famous today for his biographies of Renaissance artists, considered the ideological foundation of art-historical writing. As the first Italian art historian, he initiated the genre of an encyclopedia of artistic biographies that continues today. Vasari coined the term "Renaissance" (rinascita) in print, though an awareness of the ongoing "rebirth" in the arts had been in the air from the time of Alberti. Vasari's Le Vite de' più eccellenti pittori, scultori, ed architettori (Lives of the Most Eminent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects) — dedicated to Grand Duke Cosimo I de' Medici — was first published in 1550. It included a valuable treatise on the technical methods employed in the arts. It was partly rewritten and enlarged in 1568, with the addition of woodcut portraits of artists (some conjectural). The work has a consistent and notorious bias in favour of Florentines and tends to attribute to them all the developments in Renaissance art — for example, the invention of engraving. Venetian art in particular (along with arts from other parts of Europe), is systematically ignored in the first edition. Between the first and second editions, Vasari visited Venice and while the second edition gave more attention to Venetian art (finally including Titian) it did so without achieving a neutral point of view. Vasari's biographies are interspersed with amusing gossip. Many of his anecdotes have the ring of truth, while others are inventions or generic fictions, such as the tale of young Giotto painting a fly on the surface of a painting by Cimabue that the older master repeatedly tried to brush away, a genre tale that echoes anecdotes told of the Greek painter Apelles. With a few exceptions, however, Vasari's aesthetic judgement was acute and unbiased.[citation needed] He did not research archives for exact dates, as modern art historians do, and naturally his biographies are most dependable for the painters of his own generation and those of the immediate past. Modern criticism — with new materials opened up by research — has corrected many of his traditional dates and attributions. The work remains a classic, though it must be supplemented by modern critical research. Vasari includes a sketch of his own biography at the end of his Lives, and adds further details about himself and his family in his lives of Lazzaro Vasari and Francesco Salviati.
