Thank You for your interest. Here\'s a bit more information on the magazine IDEALS itself:

The roots of Ideals magazine go back to Milwaukee, Wis., in the early 1940s and a man named Van B. Hooper. A public relations manager for the Louis Allis Company, a Milwaukee manufacturing company.Hooper began adding bits of poetry, prose, quotations and art to the company’s newsletter.

The publication struck a chord, not only with its readers, but beyond. Requests for it began coming in from outside the company and industry. In response to the demand, Hooper launched Ideals magazine with the first Christmas issue in 1944. By the 1960s, the publishing company had branched out and was publishing children’s books as well. Like the magazine, the books centered on family, home, holidays and God.

Not surprisingly, based on my experience, the company reports that the Christmas issue continues to be the most popular of its publications.

The sappy, nostalgic, sentimental, provincial content of Ideals magazines seems completely out of step in today’s culture. We seem to be moving faster and faster, looking for the next best thing, striving to keep up with the latest trends and newest technology.

But in many respects that simplicity is precisely the appeal of the magazine. I suspect that even 50 years ago, that’s exactly why my Grandma Waltner was drawn to those pages and eager to share them with me.

Ideals is a logical and appropriate name for the publication. The definition of the word says it all:

noun: ideal

plural noun: ideals

a person or thing regarded as perfect.

a standard of perfection; a principle to be aimed at.

existing as an archetypal idea

existing as a mental image or in fancy or imagination only; broadly: lacking practicality

relating to or constituting mental images, ideas, or conceptions

relating to philosophical idealism

Ideals (the concept) are, of course, at the heart of Christmas as celebrated by the Christian church. We have become so accustomed to the numbing commercialization and secularism of the holiday — holy day — that it’s easy to forget those ideals of love, joy and peace in message and symbolism inherent in Christmas, the church’s celebration of the birth of the son of God.

Christmas is all about the ideal: “something in its absolute perfection…a standard or model of perfection or excellence … an ultimate object of endeavor; a goal … an honorable or worthy principle or aim.”

The real world is a bit more complicated and messier.

Even as a child I realized that. At the same time I was paging though the uplifting messages in those Ideals, I was aware of the cold war tensions of the 1950s and 1960s. I was aware of the paranoia over Communism, I was aware of the struggle for civil rights. I was aware of poverty and hunger in places both near and far. I was aware of the realities of pain and illness and sorrow and tragedy.

But the message of Christmas continues to give us love, joy, peace, hope and redemption that can transcend the pain and the ills of the world.

I was recently surprised to learn that Ideals continues to be published as a magazine; it’s now part of Guideposts, the company that markets inspirational publications products and services. The company uses words like “inspire, encourage, and uplift … helping people connect their faith-filled values to their daily lives … Ideals is still treasured by families who believe that no matter how times change, the vital things — family ties, love of country and faith in God — are what see us through.”
