LUCRETIA R. GARFIELD
Lucretia R. Garfield initials an autograph manuscript titled An Essay on Corn Worthy Master Brother & Sisters.
Autograph Manuscript signed: "Respectively Submitted L.R.G.", 2½p, 8x10. Titled: "An Essay on Corn/Worthy Master Brothers & Sisters". Spelling errors not corrected. In part: "Corn is by far the most valuable crop in the United States. And if corn is abundant and cheap meats and all other nesessary articles of subsistence will be compartively easy to obtain and if corn is scarce and high the reverse will follow...Our own observation teaches us that the most thrifty Farmers in our own county are the planters that raise their own corn at home...." Lucretia Rudolph Garfield's parents were farmers. In 1876, Congressman and Mrs. Garfield purchased a farm in Garfield's congressional district, near Mentor, Ohio which they named "Lawnfield". After her husband's assassination, she moved back to the farm with her children. Lightly creased. Light ink show through. Lightly soiled. Folds not at signature. 1-inch separation at right horizontal fold touches 1 word of text. Tape repair at lower blank vertical fold.
