Click on this image for a closer look.The Double-Headed Eagle has served as the Russian Royal Imperial Coat of Arms since the 15th century when it was borrowed by Tsar Ivan the III from Byzantium. It has served as the family crest of the Romanov Family since 1613. (The year, 2013, celebrated 400 years of the Romanov Family.) Upon the division of the Roman dominions into the Eastern and Western empires, and subsequently consolidated into \"The Holy Roman Empire\", the Double-Headed Eagle became the emblem of this double empire; one head looking, as it were, to the West, or Rome, and the other to the East, or Byzantium. Another explanation for the two heads: each head represents the Church and the State, respectively, ruling the one \"Body Politic\". The eagle, as a symbol, is of great antiquity. In Egypt, Greece and Persia, the eagle was sacred and a symbol of the sun.
