Large Antique CHALKWARE Wall Hanging, Southern Belle PLANTATION Mansion Staircase
Very dimensional, like a Sculpture -- Age estimate is from 1940s

This large sculptural wall hanging is in excellent vintage condition. No damage or flaws of any kind. Depicts an 1800s Southern plantation scene on stairway of a gentleman taking lady\'s hand -- Ladywith fancy gown dress with hoop skirt, and gentleman in formal coat with tails on staircase, reminiscent of \"Gone With The Wind,\" and Scarlett O\'Hara.

This was my grandmother\'s. It came from Evansville, IN -- she was born in 1895. She furnished her Victorian home with many things in this style. It could be older than the 1940s, but I am guessing it\'s date to be then.

Measures: 12 in. wide x 14 1/2 in. tall / Very Heavy: weighs 6 lbs / Ready to hang, wire on back.In Excellent Antique Condition -- PERFECT finish, No nicks or flaws, no damage of any kind.
Chalkware is really plaster of Paris decorated with watercolors. One type was molded from Staffordshire and other porcelain models and painted and sold as inexpensive decorations in the nineteenth century. This type is very valuable today. Figures of plaster, made from about 1910 to 1940 for use as prizes at carnivals, are also known as chalkware. Chalkware is very unsophisticated and is often considered folk art. Kewpie dolls made of chalkware will be found in their own category.
Technically, chalkware is made of gypsum plaster and then painted in pastels or bright watercolors (it doesn’t have any chalk in it!) Early on, chalkware was considered a ‘folk art,’ art created by untrained individuals. Most chalkware was sold by carnival vendors, throughout the early to middle of the 20thcentury, and was therefore considered the ‘poor man’s porcelain,’ especially since World War II prevented the importation of ceramics.
