Print satirizing the flight of Jefferson Davis after the fall of the Confederacy, 1865. Medium folio lithograph. Currier & Iver, New York. Loss at bottom corners and margin tears closed with paper verso.

Features a cartoon depicting Davis disguised as a woman, being pursued by Union soldiers, who recognize him and order him to surrender. Davis, who carries a bag marked GOLD, responds by saying, \"I thought your government more magnanimous than to hunt down women and children!\"

Though it had no basis in truth, the rumor that Old Jeff was taken into custody in petticoats was simply too attractive to Northerners celebrating victory in the Civil War, and added to the humiliation of the South. Fanciful cartoon depictions of the event circulated widely, and offset the grim counterpoint of the Lincoln assassination. This is one of the most famous, by noted engravers Currier & Ives.
