Marcel Mouly is one of the most important artists of the modern era. His ability to combine aspects of Cubism, Impressionism, and Fauvism into his own unique artistic style has set him apart as an artist. His ability to combine disciplines also played a significant role in shaping the history of French art and modern art around the world during the twentieth century.Born in 1942 in Paris, Marcel Mouly grew up with a love of art but did not think he had enough potential to turn his passion into a career. He worked at a public beach, a dental assistant, and a wine merchant as a young adult. While working as a wine merchant, Mouly began taking art classes at night at the French Academies as an outlet for his creativity. In 1942, he was mistaken as a spy in then occupied France and imprisoned by the Nazi German government. He was imprisoned for a year and forced to live in solitary confinement. With nothing else to do, Mouly reflected on his life and decided that when he was released he would focus on becoming a legitimate artist.After his release in 1943, Marcel Mouly befriended Eduard Pignon who helped Mouly exhibit his first two paintings at the Saloned’Automne in Paris. His paintings were such a success that his art career took off instantly. By 1948, he had gained a substantial international following and was exhibiting art across the globe. He befriended many important artists in the French art scene and became notable for his unique artistic style.Marcel Mouly was extremely important in the development of twentieth century modern art. His artwork combined a number of artistic points of view from the earlier twentieth century. His use of brushstrokes harkened back to Impressionism, while his use of bold colors was considered a Fauvist influence. He was also very influenced by Picasso and Braque and incorporated the Cubist use of multiple perspectives on a single canvas. Mouly most frequently painted female figures, harbor scenes, and still life works. Mouly’s art showcases a great amount of passion and is a great master of capturing the essence of movement since he often paints images of objects, people, or nature in motion. Although Mouly is best known for his paintings, he is also a skilled print maker and even experimented with sculpture with the influence of his good friend, famous sculptor Jacques Lipchitz. Mouly’s ability to create a style completely unique to him and his willingness to experiment set him apart as an artist and carved out his own place in the history of modern art.Marcel Mouly passed away on January 7, 2009 at the age of 89. His art continues to live on. His work can be seen in museums all over the world including the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in Japan, and the Museum of Geneva, as well as in many independent art collections.
