This beautiful basket is very shallowand measures approximately 11inches wide.
Imbenge (beer pot covers) were traditionally woven from grass and palm
until modernization brought multicolored telephone wire to the area.
Zulu night watchmen began weaving discarded pieces of the telephone wire around
their traditional walking sticks to relieve boredom during their long shifts.
Soon the colorful wire was adopted by skilled Zulu basket weavers.
Over the years, this style of basket has grown into a contemporary art form of intricate,
mesmerizing design and color and can be foundon displayin art museums throughout the world.
Zulu baskets are traditionally made by expert weavers from the
KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa.
KwaZulu-Natal is well known for producing some of the highest quality African baskets.
Many Zulu women work from their homes making these baskets by hand,
using natural raw materials and dyes obtained in the area.
These women have managed to turn their amazing skills into a home industry
and for some this is their only source of income.
