LARGE CHINESE EXPORT SILVER GOBLET, ‘DRAGONS & FLAMING PEARL’, WC 90, C. 1900

This large goblethas a good sized cup and is very usable. Itis fully marked to the base with the marks WCand90 and also bears Chinese character marks.WC stands for Wing Chun, also known as Wang Chun, a retail silversmith known for quality and style. They traded from 25 & 58 Stanley Street, Hong Kong between the years 1860 and 1915. This goblet was made around 1900,or in the first few years thereafter, and shows theinfluenceof‘Arts and Crafts’design.

Thebowl of thecuponly has beenplanishedor handhammered, and has a matte finishwhichprovides a dramatic backdrop for the large pair ofrepoussedragons who are chasing the flaming pearl. The interior of the bowl is deeply gilded. The stem is of plain silverwith a large and unusualquadri-lobed knop, comprising four balls chased withflower heads, possiblysunflowers. To the top of the foot isa border of cherryblossom sprays againsta finely punched ground.

A large and very functionalgoblet, clearly influenced by thenew‘Arts and Crafts’design aesthetic of the early 1900s.

Condition – Very good, commensurate with age and careful usage. Some slight signs of wear and use, which do not detract.
