You\'re offerding on a large - 40\" X 18\" - beautiful framed original signed pastel work by William Henry Chandler - a lakeside landscape scene. A country path winds through the grass along the treeline at right, while boats sail in a serene lake at right... mountains rise up in the background and birds soar in the sky. I\'m assuming the framing is original - it\'s a sort of 1920s-1930s bronze-painted woooden frame with an Art Deco carved design. Note that I unframed this piece because the inside of the glass needed cleaning and I quickly discovered why - there is no fixative applied to this piece - so I will sell this item in it\'s framed-under-glass state only - for that reason this item is available to US domestic buyers only as the cost and risk of ruining this piece by shipping overseas probably does not make any sense. The dimensions in frame are 42\" X 20 1/2\"
William Henry Chandler (1854-1928) is probably America\'s premier pastel artist - very prolific, his warm, pastoral style was very popular from the 19th through the early 20th century, and basically became a dominant style for the pastel medium. Chandler originally opened a studio in New York to produce original pastel works in competition with print houses like Currier and Ives and Prang - Ironically perhaps, by the time of his death Prang was producing litho reproductions of Chandler works and his pieces were being sold throughout the country by large department stores like Marshall Fields and Sears.
This work does have some small condition issues - there is some slight moisture stain along the right edge (see photos) and the bottom corner below the signature apparently detached and was fixed with a tape repair on the back side at some point (see photos) - overall this is a clean work, though, and nice large format. The frame has some slight scuff in spots but retains its period appeal as well. I considered replacing the glass for the safety of the work but it looks to be original antique hand-blown glass so I opted to leave it as is - so fyi the shipping cost reflects the large and bulky packing required to ship this piece safely in its natural state.
