Up for sale is a beautifully crafted old Southern splint oak buttocks basket. It would have been intended for actual use as a market basket or a vegetable gathering basket. It has terrific detailing, with its nice sturdy solid construction. The basket has a rounded bentwood hardwood frame with solid oak weavers filling in the sides. The rim is really nice, with its thick and sturdy oak splints, its classic handle attachment, and its bentwood rim construction. The handle is amazing - it\'s rare that you find bentwood this thick and sturdy. If you look carefully at the sides you can see three faint earthtone stripes on each side. The patina on the basket is an attractive brown, which is lighter on the underside, further proof of honest age. This beautifully woven antique splint oak buttocks basket will make a terrific addition to someone\'s collection.

The basket, as noted, is a nice large size, measuring 12\" across at the from handle to handle, 14½\" long from end to end, and 7½\" deep - about 11½\" tall to the top of the handle. The basket is in quite good condition for its age. If you look carefully at the photo showing the end of the basket you can see several missing weavers, and there are a couple more narrow missing weavers throughout. These are the basket\'s only flaws and are actually quite minor. The handle, base with its support splints, and all of the other weavers are all intact. See photos, as they give a true picture of its features and condition. It\'s a very nice old American splint oak basket, which makes a beautiful piece for display or would still be sturdy enough to tote your vegetables if desired.
