Antique Japanese Meiji Period (1868-1912) bronze censor or incense burner. The censor measures 9 inches or 22.8 cm high, and is 9 inches or wide from handle to handle.

The bronze censor features 3 animal paw feet at the base with butterfly legs. The body has a continuous frieze of high relief Noh masks on a dotted background. The smoke from the incense is released through the mouths of the masks. It has dragon handles on the sides and a large figure of a dragon chasing the pearl of wisdom on the cover. It is signed on the bottom with a Japanese chop mark. The bronze has a golden brown patina or color which is all original to the piece.

The bronze is in very good condition. There are age appropriate variations to the patina with some areas of verdigris. Please see the photos for more on the look and condition of this Japanese Meiji Period censor as they are an important part of the description.
