Large Vintage Round Charleston Gullah Sweetgrass Serving Basket w/ Loop Rim:

Up for sale is a well crafted and quite large sized vintage Gullah sweetgrass basket, woven in the middle years of the past century. This basket is formed in an unusual round shape, with a round cupholder in the center, and a series of loops all around the rim. These decorative loops are not stitched on, but were woven right into the body of the basket at the time it was made. This basket was made of the traditional sweetgrass bound with the traditional palmetto binding. There are also bands of pineneedle accents decorating the base and on the rim - in fact a lot of pine needles were used in this basket\'s construction, and they make a nice contrast. The basket is old enough that the palmetto wraps have lost their greenish color and have turned almost the same shade as the sweetgrass coils - I would put its age as from the 1960\'s or 1970\'s. This is a beautiful Gullah basket which makes a very attractive piece for use or display.

The basket, as noted, is a nice large size for one of these vintage Gullah baskets, measuring a full 12\" across at the rim (without the loops) and 3\" deep. The basket is in excellent shape for its age. One of the loops droops a bit but it is not damaged. Another loop is missing a single palmetto wrap on the underside. These two minor flaws are the only damage this basket has. The underside and the center cup are in perfect condition. See photos, as they give a true picture of the basket\'s features and condition. This is a lovely example of innovative American folk art weaving and will make a beautiful addition to someone\'s collection of vintage Southern Gullah folk art baskets.
